thurgoodYou know, even though I knew the ending, reading this still made me angry.  The desolation that this, the most qualified man to be nominated, man had to endure was sickening.

Thurgood Marshall has arguably done more for the advancement of civil rights and the rights of Black people more than anyone in the history of America.  The Great Litigator was a pure example of someone earning the respect of those that hated him.  I recommend researching and learning his history but this book chronicles the time of his nomination by LBJ to the moment he was sworn in as our nation’s first African-American Supreme court judge (I still believe the only).

Biography of our 96th Supreme Court judge.

President Johnson felt it was time for a Black judge on the court and most of his thoughts were due to the fact that Mr. Marshall was more than qualified.  And everyone knew it.  Th maneuverings LBJ had to do were nothing less than extraordinary as he pandered for the needed votes to secure the nomination.  All the while, Mr. Marshall had to lament in unprecedented delays, interrogations and character assassinations just to do a task he was overly qualified for.

We all know the results but the journey was painful.  A true stain on our nation’s past but if you follow politics today, you’ll see what it takes to achieve greatness in our nation’s capitol.
